On May 23, 2015, the Android 5.1.1 started rolling out on the Motorola Nexus 6 on T-Mobile.

GSM Arena reported that an over-the-air Android 5.1.1 build started becoming available to Shamu users on T-Mobile. The carrier also confirmed the news via its Twitter account. Android Police discovered the availability among Nexus 6 users on T-Mobile, which updated the device's build number from LMY47M to LYZ28E.

T-Mobile evangelist, Des Smith, previously tweeted that Google and the wireless carrier were working to fix a Wi-Fi calling bug.

On May 23, 2015, Smith tweeted the news, "THIS JUST IN!!! @TMobile has approved the #Nexus6 WiFi Calling Software Update! Happy Memorial Day Weekend!" Smith added that it will take about nine to 10 days to fix and test, but that the announcement of the nifty new feature would likely start appearing on the Nexus image site by evening of the same day.

GSM Arena wrote that the Android 5.1.1 package on T-Mobile is around 125 MB. Many features on the Android 5.1.1 plus other improvements were included with the WiFi calling feature on T-Mobile. The availability of the new capability will likely come in stages, so not all users will be able to download the package immediately. All Nexus 6 users should expect to have the update available by the end of May 2015. Manual flashing is also available for users who wish to have the Android 5.1.1 as soon as possible.

The new update is expected to present new features and bug fixes on the existing devices. Users are recommended to plug in their device and maintain a strong Wi-Fi network to ensure that the OTA download is carried out as smoothly and as seamlessly as possible. The 125 MB download should also take only several minutes. T-Mobile users can expect to find the new changes that come with the update as soon as they reset their device after the download and installation process is completed.

Shawn De Cesari of Android Police stated that +Verizon Wireless will also be adding IMEI numbers for the Nexus 6 model that were not bought from them. This means that regardless of where Nexus 6 users purchased their units, they can activate it on Verizon via normal channels, receive discounts and get other perks.

Google Nexus 6 was announced in October 2014 and ran initially on Android 5.0 Lollipop. It was officially released to the US market in early November.
