In the case of Samsung's latest flagship smartphone, it looks like it's still existing in the shadow of its predecessor.

According to Consumer Reports, the Samsung Galaxy S5 is better than the S6, albeit by a small margin.

"The product review company gave the throne to the Samsung Galaxy S5, which earned a score of 79. The LG G3 followed with a score of 78, and Apple's iPhone 6 tied with the Galaxy S6 with a score of 77," Digital Trends noted.

Some may not be surprised with this ranking as there had been an uproar over the removal of the beloved MicroSD slot. A number of reviewers had also frowned over the loss of the water resistance and the removable battery. As it turns out, these were the factors that mainly affected the S6's ranking in the review company's list.

"We would normally expect the new ones to surpass the predecessor, but in this case it didn't," Maria Rerecich, the Consumer Reports heads of electronics testing, explained.

"I think the idea that you can add memory and be able to replace the battery - some people like to be able to have that flexibility," she also said, adding that some users may think that the loss of the three features mentioned isn't a big deal.

However, judging by the current trends, it would appear that there will be about 70 million users who won't care much for expandable memory and water resistance. This is especially when the removal of those features were offset with innovative upgrades, such as an improved fingerprint scanner, a better interface, and a superior camera. Plus a free battery replacement service.

"For those who are diehards when it comes to expandable memory, replaceable batteries, and water resistance, the Galaxy S5 can be had at a handsome discount now that it's considered outdated," Digital Trends reported.

Meanwhile, Forbes said that Samsung's Active version of the Galaxy S6 is set to debut sometime in May. Based on leaks, it appears that the upcoming model will be "a more robust looking version of the S6, with some key changes."

"Firstly the fingerprint scanner is missing, as it was in the Galaxy S5 Active and there appears to be two new physical buttons either side of the home-button. On the rear, the reinforced casing also features the heart-rate monitor and a similar shaped camera. It seems as if the speakers have also been moved to the back (bottom left)," the news source went on to say.

Samsung has not confirmed these details yet, though.
