An analysis on Microsoft's decision to release an updated Surface Pro 3 equipped with Intel's Broadwell processors speculated that the company may be thinking of skipping the said processor type and using Intel's Skylake chips - and putting this into the Pro 4.

"I suspect that with Skylake, the kind of performance that Intel will be able to deliver in a 4 watt power envelope will rival what Intel is getting in 15 watts with its Haswell chips today," The Motley Fool contributor Ashraf Eassa said. "This means that when the Skylake Core M chips are available later this year, Microsoft should be able to deliver a thin, light, and fanless device that offers approximately Surface Pro 3-level performance."

Regarding why Microsoft didn't use Core M last year, this is what Eassa had to say:

"Microsoft possibly could have chosen to build an updated Surface Pro 4 around the 'good' Broadwell-based Core M chips in early 2014. However, this product would be obsolete within two or three quarters once Intel rolled out the Skylake-based Core M chips."

Further, he also said that the company may have been eyeing a new Surface Pro launch that coincides with the release of Windows 10.

"So it likely made sense for Microsoft to just skip over the Broadwell-based Core M and update the Surface Pro when Skylake and Windows 10 become available," Eassa concluded.

Meanwhile, Digital Trends believe it is possible that the Surface Pro 4 will indeed be equipped with the Skylake chips when it will be released probably in the third quarter of this year.

"If Intel doesn't suffer any delays - as it did in releasing Broadwell - that places a release somewhere between July and September, which is when Windows 10 is scheduled for release," the tech news source speculated about Microsoft's next tablet launch.

If indeed this prediction is proved to be spot on, Pro 4 will become one of the first gadgets to sport Skylake, which facilitates better energy efficiency, giving devices longer battery life and enabling a thinner design.

The fact that Surface Pro 4 "has the longest development cycle out of all the Surfaces yet released" is one telling proof that Microsoft may have something really special in the pipeline. Could the Pro 4 give Apple a good run for its money where tablets are concerned? We'll know when Microsoft finally releases its next flagship tablet model.
