Apple iPad 4 Vs. Google Nexus 10: Two High-End Tablets Will Compete This Fall

This fall will offer the most robust lineup of tablets and smartphones ever. Consumers will have more choices than before, whether about size, price, or technical prowess. Those looking to buy a tablet will inevitably land on Apple's new iPad, but keep in mind that there is a new, high-end 10-inch tablet from Google on the way.

The new Nexus 10 tablet, referred to in inner circles as 'Manta,' is scheduled to take Apple's iPad head on in the same price range, so let's see what both of them have to offer. 

Apple recently unveiled a new iPad 4 alongside the much-anticipated iPad Mini on October 23. The iPad 4 isn't much of an upgrade over the iPad 3, and many of its improvements lie internally. 

The iPad 4 features the Retina display with a 2048X1536 resolution that puts out 264 pixels per inch (ppi). It also has the new dual-core A6X processor and quad-core graphics. The new processor is supposed to provide up to two times the performance of the iPad 3. The new iPad will also run iOS 6 out of the box, and feature the new, smaller Lightning dock introduced with the iPhone 5. 

The iPad 4 also features a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera. The Apple tablet is available in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models. 

Google's Nexus 10 will be revealed at the October 29 press conference. Details about the tablet known so far are based on leaked reports. The tablet will be a joint Google-Samsung effort.

The Nexus 10 should feature a 10.1-inch screen with an incredible 2560X1600 resolution and a whopping 299 ppi. The tablet should run Android 4.2, which will also make its debut on October 29.

Website SamMobile states that the Nexus 10 should come in 16GB and 32GB models, and that in addition to a Wi-Fi-only model, Samsung could be working on a cellular version as well. 

The EXIF data on an image on Picasa indicates that the Nexus 10 should come with a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera. The Nexus 7 comes with a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera, so it's a good bet that the Nexus 10 will sport the same, if not better, camera. 

The iPad 4 starts at $499, and there's a good chance the Nexus 10 will cost just as much, especially given its specs so far. Official details about the Nexus 10 won't be out until next Monday, but given the specs so far, which tablet would you choose? The iPad 4 or the Nexus 10?
