Could we be seeing a new "Dark Knight" film sequel in the next few years? DC Comics recently announced that Batman artist and writer will be doing the conclusion of "The Dark Knight Returns" trilogy.

"The 'THE DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE' is the sequel to Miller's 1986 classic THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS - heralded by TIME Magazine as one of the 10 greatest graphic novels of all time - and its 2001-2002 follow-up series 'BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT STRIKES AGAIN,'" the company, through its official blog, declared.

"Miller will be joined by acclaimed writer Brian Azzarello (100 BULLETS, JOKER, and WONDER WOMAN) on the eight-issue comic book periodical, to be published twice a month under the DC Comics imprint," DC Comics went on to reveal. "Marking the 30th anniversary of THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS original series, this periodical is slated for publication beginning in late Fall 2015."

However, the company pointed out that Miller won't be drawing the new sequel by himself. Another artist will be doing the artwork in his stead. And he would get help in authoring it, considering his health and age.

The announcement did not reveal whether an artist has already been picked for this assignment, Wired noted.

"Batman remains my favorite comic book hero and a sequel to Dark Knight is going to be daunting," Miller was quoted as saying in a statement, according to The Verge. "But we'll do our best."

Meanwhile, Screen Rant commented that the timing of the new sequel's creation "is likely meant to tie in with Zack Snyder's 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' debuting next year."

While "The Dark Knight Returns" was acclaimed as one of the best graphic series of all time and managed to remove Batman from a "campy" image perpetuated by the 1960 version of the superhero, "The Dark Knight Strikes Again" did not reap a similar reception.

Considering this, will Miller and his collaborators manage to release a sequel that recalls the acclaim of "The Dark Knight Returns"? Or will he turn in a yet underwhelming follow up?

"It's unlikely 'The Dark Knight III: The Master Race' will reinvent the character of Batman or influence comics in the same manner as its predecessor, but perhaps, with the help of Azzarello, the new series will capture some of what fans appreciated about 'The Dark Knight Returns," Screen Rant speculated.

We'll have to wait until Fall of this year before we can even start to find out for sure.
