Rumors have it that the Nokia Lumia 830 will soon be replaced by the Lumia 840 - but only once all the 830 has been sold out.

Phone Arena said that in some countries, such as India, the 830 will be succeeded by the Lumia 840 once stock of the former runs out. Microsoft will also release the 840 pretty soon to the local market.

"The Lumia 840 is expected to come with Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2 pre-installed," the site revealed. "That might seem a wee bit surprising in light of the reports that Windows 10 for Phones is expected to come out of the box on the Microsoft Lumia 940."

"The Lumia 830 didn't exactly set the wireless world on fire. The device features a 5-inch 720 x 1280 resolution (HD) screen. A quad-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 CPU and Adreno 305 GPU are both under the hood," it added.

Meanwhile, an "anonymous" Microsoft staff had divulged details about "a mid-range device which he says will come with dual SIM capabilities, a 13-14MP rear PureView camera, 5MP front-facing snapper, a 5-inch screen and a design similar or "slightly modified" to the Lumia 830."

"While it is not sure what the name may be, we may call it Lumia 840 for our convenience," Phone Arena quoted the source as saying. "This device may have a screen size around 5-inch."

Microsoft has not yet confirmed the existence of the Lumia 840. It's been speculated that this alleged handset may be released in the coming months.

In other news, there also are rumors of a Lumia 740 XL coming out pretty soon. This model will reportedly have a 5.5 or 5.7-inch screen and have specs similar to the Lumia 840, BGR said. However, it won't be sporting the same PureView main camera.

It is possible that these two upcoming products may be launched before Windows 10's official release. It's also expected that these handsets can be updated with the newest OS version once it's available.

If indeed the Lumia 840 will be only equipped with Windows 8.1, this is likely due to the fact that the model is not considered a high end, much less a flagship, one. It would seem as if Microsoft's release of the Lumia 840 is seen as a necessary upgrade to the rather mediocre 830, which had been described in an Engadget review as a "'bridge' device."

"It's got the high-end looks and capable camera of flagship-level phones, along with the performance and display resolution of mid-range and budget models," the review said of the Lumia 830.

Will the Lumia 840 be a real upgrade of the 830? We'll know in the next few months.
