With the release of compelling, new smartphones, gadget makers now feel the need to take their respective products to the next level in order to compete with new innovations and stand out in the market.

That considered, it appears Microsoft has opted to get smartphone users' attention via a powerful engine and a high-MP camera.

Reports have it that the company is working on its next flagship smartphone, said to be the Lumia 940. Recently, specs of the upcoming handset has been leaked, exciting fans of Windows phones. The said gadget will allegedly "come with a 5-inch display with a 1080p resolution that'll be protected with a Gorilla Glass 4 protective screen," according to Tech Radar.

"The processor of the Lumia 940 will apparently be a 2.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 805 that will be backed up with a hefty 3GB of RAM," the tech news source went on to say. "The Lumia 940 will also allegedly come with a new PureView camera with a 24 megapixel resolution that will be able to shoot 4K video at 60fps. The front-facing camera will apparently be a decent 5MP snapper as well."

Sounds like this is also one compelling smartphone worth anticipating. The camera's resolution alone makes it hard for fans to wait for test shots to emerge.

The handset has been touted as having a 5.2-inch display - and a larger counterpart, Lumia 940 XL, having a display that measures 5.7 inches, Phone Arena noted.

This somehow echoes Apple's smartphone releases last year, which involved not one but two models, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. If indeed Microsoft will release two models, it appears it is pushing its flagship smartphone on a head-to-head rivalry with Apple's smartphones.

On the other hand, Stuff said that the gadget may be expected to have "native support for pen styluses, iris-scanning capabilities, 3D-like interactions and dual-sim support." The site also predicts octacore processors for the two models.

So, when will the new Windows phone be released? GSM Arena speculated that the handset may be announced "as early as April 29 at the BUILD conference." However, if rumors saying that the Lumia 940 will come equipped with Windows Phone 10, it would seem that it will be a while before this model will be released. Keep checking this space for more updates.

If indeed the Lumia 940 will have all the specs mentioned, will you get one for yourself? Do let us know what you think!
