Rumors are circulating that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) might have the iPod Touch 6th Gen in the works.

Apple still has a number of new devices to launch in 2015, such as the much-anticipated Apple Watch, available on April 24, and MacBook with Retina display. Reportedly, the company is now developing the next generation of iPhones, after the success of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

Crossmap reported that the iPod Touch 5th Generation, released in 2012, might have been the last product offering since some people believe that Apple will no longer be featuring a newer version. The popularity and functionality of smartphones might have made the iPod Touch a mere add-on to people's collection of gadgets. Master Herald noted that the niche market for a device that can play music and videos and store photos and files might have become smaller, as smartphones continue to develop and possess all these characteristics, at the same time, offering a lot more.

Despite all of the ongoing Apple projects, there are talks that the company might still have enough left to come up with the iPod Touch 6G within the year.

Based on a report by Christian Today, some users speculate that the iPod Touch 6th Gen might be introduced in September 2015, together with the new iPhones. Others think that Apple might not feature a newer version of the iTouch until 2016.

Even though there is no confirmation from Apple yet whether they will indeed release a newer version of the portable media player, fans are already sharing the features that they expect to find. According to Crossmap, people expect the iPod Touch 6th Gen to come in a wide array of color options, similar to its predecessors. Color choices may include pink, red, space grey, yellow, silver and blue. Second, users may have a couple of options in terms of display size. The iPod Touch 6 might come with a 4.7-inch Retina display and a larger 5.5-inch Retina display.

The device will most likely operate on the iOS9 and run on the recent A8 processor, the report added. Users might have as much as 128GB of internal memory, with the option to add more via a microSD card. Additional features may reportedly include an 8-megapixel iSight camera and the virtual assistant Siri. Finally, Apple might make it waterproof or at least water-resistant. It may also be compatible with the Apple Watch.

Based on the same report by Crossmap, if Apple decides to release the iPod Touch 6, it may retail anywhere between $250 and $399, depending on the screen size and internal memory.
