Has Samsung the ultimate strategy that will trump rivals in the tech industry?

Reports have it that the South Korean electronics juggernaut will be making a flexible smartphone that can double as a wearable smartwatch.

Or, as Phone Arena wondered, could it be the other way around?

Whichever, this innovation, should it be realized, would be a 2-in-1 wonder. Some might even predict that this might be the Samsung Galaxy S7.

The said development was found out via a patent application, filed back in September 2013, that appears to be a "wrist band computer."

"More specifically, the invention relates to wearable devices that are capable of transforming between an annularly bent state and a flat state," Patently Mobile revealed. "Samsung's next-gen smartwatch is noted as being able to support both multimedia and communication modules."

As can be seen in the image, it appears that the screen "can be attached to rotatable segments that allow the device's shape to contort without destroying any of the less-than-flexible components," Digital Trends explained. "Much like the links in a metal watch band, the segments will allow for full flexibility."

Further, the said gadget will allow the user to "control your music, show pictures, make calls, send texts, and perform all the tasks you normally associate with a smartphone or smartwatch." And, judging by its wide width, it looks as if the handset will curl into what looks to be a big bangle, which makes it a bit too bulky to be worn on the wrist regularly like a smartwatch, as Tech Radar noted.

"Although the purported wearable looks more appropriate for a rave party rather than something to be worn on a daily basis in all occasions, the concept itself is pretty cool and might turn out better than expected," Phone Arena mused.

Despite the patent application, it's not guaranteed that Samsung, like Apple, will use it in future iterations. However, what is certain is that the company will be issuing gadgets with flexible displays in the future.

"We will secure production capacity of 30,000 to 40,000 [flexible displays each month] by the end of next year," said Samsung Display's VP for business strategy Lee Chang-hoon in November 2014, according to ZD Net. "There will be no company [except Samsung] that has this great production capacity by 2016."

"We plan to provide consumers with a product that has a flexible display by the end of the year. However, nothing has been decided on the finished product," he went on to announce.

Come 2016, we might see the first flexible smartphones roll out of Samsung's doors.
