Are those reports alleging Andrew Garfield is back for "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" an April Fools' joke?

Movie Pilot recently hosted a post that alleged the British actor has been confirmed to reprise his role in the third installment of the "Spider-Man" franchise.

However, upon closer examination, it appears the update is highly dubious, considering the many typos and incoherent sentences that strung the piece of news together. There also are no reliable sources quoted or even linked to the said news, which apparently lead us to believe that the update is a hoax.

However, it's been rumored that a new "Spider-Man" flick may be released in the summer of 2017, but it will "have no connection to any of Sony's previous Spider-Man movies," according to ScreenRant.

Based on this information, it appears that it's understandable that Andrew won't be playing the lead in that film, as he's been associated with those "previous Spider-Man movies" mentioned.

Also, talk has it that Sony will be creating "an entire Spider-Man cinematic multiverse," which also implies that the studio is not letting Marvel dip its fingers into this comic book character.

With this arrangement, Sony may offer various incarnations of Spidey, which would flex the creative muscles of scribes, directors, and actors involved in future projects in that cine-verse.

Previously, the speculation over a Sony-Marvel deal that will have the web slinger swinging alongside Marvel superheroes appeared to necessitate Andrew's removal from the project, as "it didn't make sense to keep him for what will be a new chapter for Spider-Man," a source reportedly told The Daily Beast.

Considering that the "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" didn't do very well as expected at the box office, it appears that it is time for the big bosses to take the franchise back to the drawing board. Apparently, this plan to create a Spidey-verse is the result of a concerted effort to resuscitate the character and perhaps let a new lead actor breathe life to the superhero.

Or perhaps the bigwigs are willing to take another risk with the same actor?

CinemaBlend claimed that the third installment may have been greenlighted as a casting call for the movie has been sent out earlier this year. Curiously, the said call listed Andrew and Dane DeHaan as the lead actors, with the following description provided for the film: "Peter Parker/Spider-man faces a new challenge to protect New York City."

Again, these updates have not been confirmed by Sony. Keep your eyes on this space for more news!
