When Roberto Orci signed off from filmmaking duties in the upcoming "Star Trek 3" movie, fans wondered what will happen to the project and whether the plot would change with his departure.

Enter "Fast and Furious" director Justin Lin, who took over directing duties for the third installation; the script has reportedly undergone a complete overhaul, thanks to Simon Pegg and Doug Jung.

Fans would know that Pegg is the "miracle-working, Enterprise-anthropomorphising chief engineer Montgomery 'Scotty' Scott in the films," as noted by The Guardian. As such, it won't be surprising to hear exclamations of surprise over his appointment as scriptsmith. However, he's not inexperienced.

"Pegg's only solo cinematic writing credit to date is 'Run, Fatboy, Run,' which received lukewarm reviews, although he co-scripted the Cornetto trilogy - 'Shaun of the Dead,' 'Hot Fuzz' and 'The World's End' - with Edgar Wright," the news source said.

Pegg has since revealed that, rather than revising Orci's script - which was reportedly one factor that influenced his departure from the film's director's seat as the studio had concerns over the screenplay - he had gone and made a "completely" new one.

"I haven't read Bob (Orci)'s script and they didn't want us to," Pegg shared, as noted by ScreenRant. "So we went back to the drawing board."

"We had creative meetings with Justin and there were things he wanted in there. I haven't written like this before. I've never been a custodian of something, it's usually mine what I'm writing. Whereas with this, you're given a bunch of stuff - 'Look we want this in it and this in it.' Or Justin will say - he's got an amazing visual mind, Justin. He's great at that kind of choreography. So he'll say, 'What if this happens?' So Doug and I go, 'Okay, right, let's try and get that into it.' So it's an interesting process," he explained.

With all that, one wonders what treatment Pegg and co. gave the script.

"I think we just want to take it forward with the spirit of the TV show," Pegg was quoted by Variety as saying. "It's a story about frontierism and adventure and optimism and fun, and that's where we want to take it, you know, where no man has gone before - where no one has gone before, sensibly corrected for a slighter more enlightened generation."

Sounds like the "Star Trek" Trekkies have known and loved.

"Star Trek 3" has been scheduled for a July 2016 release.
