Even though the second generation Moto X is still half a year old, Motorola is already gearing for the release of its successor, the third generation Moto X. And that's not according to rumors.

This bit of news came from the horse's mouth himself, none other than Motorola President Rick Osterloh.

"We try to stay on a roughly annual cycle for all of our products including Moto X," he tweeted in response to a user's question about the time-frame of the next Moto X release.

However, Osterloh didn't specify a release date for this year's iteration.

"Since the previous Moto X models were introduced in August and September, respectively, that's when we should expect to see the third-gen Moto X," Phone Arena speculated.

"A cooler Snapdragon 815 successor is already in the pipeline, and the Snapdragon 820 is already official, so hopefully the Moto X will be utilizing S815 or S820 instead of the 810 model, no matter the earlier announcement," GSM Arena said. It's been earlier reported that the next flagship handset will be equipped with the latest Snapdragon 810 chip.

Talk has it that the next Moto X may be "smarter than any other smartphones," according to BGR. If indeed that will be the case, then there is much reason to be excited about the handset's release later this year.

The current Moto X has already wowed fans and users with its impressive specs and stylish look.

"Moto X gives pure Android fans a reason to upgrade thanks to a 1080p display and premium design. The camera isn't perfect, but Motorola's specs bump everywhere else is a treat and Moto Maker is the cherry on top," TechRadar's review of the device read.

Meanwhile, Engadget said that the device went from "also-ran to amazing in one year," with Motorola apparently learning from its errors.

"This year's Moto X still isn't perfect -- the camera is occasionally just frustrating, and its battery life is purely average compared to the rest of its rivals -- but it's the closest that Motorola has come in a very long time," the site's review said.

Considering this, will Motorola once again do things right with the third gen Moto X?

Whatever your expectations of the next model, you may not find a fingerprint sensor on it, CNET noted. Osterloh was recalled to be aversive of the use of the said feature as he believed "all fingerprint readers are unreliable."

He also noted that the time it takes to swipe or tap to unlock the phone isn't much different.

Okay, so no fingerprint sensors. Will the handset have a microSD slot or better camera when it comes out then? That remains to be seen.
