The former top female tennis player in the world shared about her pain when she broke her engagement with golfer Rory McIlroy in 2014.

Caroline Wozniacki described the feeling as if someone close to her died. The power couple parted ways in May 2014 after they already sent out wedding invitations.

Wozniacki said in an interview with The Independent, "In my head I had everything until that moment. I had a great career, I was getting married, I have a perfect family. There was really nothing going against me. I was happy, very happy.

She continued, "Then all of a sudden something happens you don't expect. You see your world turned around, literally from one second to the next. I didn't know how strong I was until that happened and I didn't know how much you can actually take. It really feels like someone close to you has died."

She said, "That taught me so much. I grew up so much in that short amount of time. I also realized who is always there for me and who is just there when things are good. You learn about life. You have to enjoy it while it's there. You have to enjoy all the great moments. I think now when I look back I wouldn't have been without it because now I really know I'm strong, I know what I want, I know what I can accept, what I can't accept."

News.com reported that they broke up through a 10-minute phone conversation. McIlroy told her that he was ending the relationship. Initially, Caroline even thought that the golfer was only joking. The two announced the sad news to the public through their Twitter accounts.

USA Today reported that Wozniacki generally stayed quiet about the breakup since the announcement, although fans would troll McIlroy at times.

Wozniacki has since moved on and focused on her career. She is currently world No. 5 while McIlroy also significantly improved in his game and ranks among the top players in the world.

Wozniacki has also forged a close relationship with current world No. 1 Serena Williams, who helped get through her engagement ordeal in the past year. Sydney Morning Herald reported how Williams was devastated when she found out that the couple broke off their engagement. Williams reportedly planned Wozniacki's bachelorette party. In the meantime, the two friends can stay strong playing against each other and enjoying the single life.
