For many years, flexible displays have long remained concepts, although some devices have begun incorporating this feature. The LG G Flex 2 is an example, as well as the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. However, both are not truly flexible handsets. But that may soon change. At least according to a Samsung insider.

Digital Trends recently reported that an official from Samsung Display revealed that there might be a truly foldable smartphone out in the market next year.

"The industry believes that the commercialization of foldable smartphones will be possible in 2016," the site quoted the source as saying.

Could this mean that the Galaxy S7 will be a foldable model?

"Samsung is apparently developing foldable displays that might be found in certain smartphone models as soon as next year, with the company's flagship devices, including the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy Note 6, being likely candidate," BGR noted.

It can be recalled that in late 2014, a "senior Samsung executive" had been quoted as saying that the South Korean company's next step after releasing Edge smartphones will be creating devices with displays that can be "folded in half."

"The wording seems to imply that the smartphone that will have that screen attached to it will be bendable as well," GSM Arena pointed out.

"Samsung's display-making subsidiary is gearing up for production of such panels, and it boasts that it will have the capacity to make 30,000 to 40,000 of them each month by the end of next year," the site went on to say. "Apparently, none of Samsung's competitors will be able to match that production capacity for flexible displays until 2016."

There is suspicion that the said flexible display smartphone may emerge as early as 2015, before this year ends. However, it's also said that "nothing has been decided on the finished product" yet. If anything, it may possibly be a limited edition release.

Back in 2013, Samsung had unveiled its flexible OLED displays, dubbed YOUM displays.

"Flexible OLEDs are lightier and thinner compared to glass-based panels, and they should also be much more durable. In fact in the past they were said to be shatterproof," OLED-info said.

Meanwhile, Jae Lee, an analyst for Daiwa Securities, said that Samsung had unveiled flexible display prototypes to investors at a private event in 2013 - one in which the press was off limits.

"The first one they showed us was the size of an S3 smartphone which can be folded in half from top to bottom. So like a compact powder used by women," he told Phone Arena. "There was also one in the size of a lengthy wallet which can be unfolded on both sides into the size of a tablet computer."

Looks like we're in for exciting times in the world of mobile tech in the months ahead.
