Will this be the year when Apple releases a revamped MacBook Air?

According to Wall Street Journal's sources, the answer is yes.

"Apple Inc. suppliers have been told to start production of a larger-screen iPad in the second half of this year as the U.S. tech giant wrestles with new designs and features for the enterprise market," insiders reportedly told the business and finance news source. "The Cupertino, Calif., company had originally told suppliers that it wanted to start mass production of the 12.9-inch iPad in the first quarter of this year."

It can be recalled that previous rumors point to a mid-2015 shipping date, as noted by Macworld. With this recent update, although unconfirmed by Apple, it appears that the case for a June shipment is indeed a very strong one.

"A second quarter ship date could put the release of this alleged product anywhere between April and June. This makes sense, as this is the time period Apple frequently releases updates or redesigns of its notebook products," Mashable said.

If indeed the MacBook Air Retina will be shipped in June, it's highly likely it will be announced at Apple's March 9 event, along with the company's smartwatch.

"Still, it seems more likely that Apple would save a full MacBook Air redesign for an event not as tied to a singular product, such as WWDC in June," the site speculated.

Reports have it that iPhone maker will be releasing a redesigned 12-inch MacBook Air, which will sport a Retina display and "come without full-sized USB ports, the MagSafe connector, and SD Card slot," as relayed by Fortune.

The last time that Apple updated the MacBook Air was in 2010, which is 5 years ago. As such, it's about time that the Cupertino, Ca.-based company issue a new iteration of its line of ultrathin laptops.

Macworld explained that the delay may be highly likely down to Intel's sluggish production of the Broadwell line of processors which will enable Apple to put together a very thin and fanless, yet powerful, laptop. The tech juggernaut planned to use "a different series of Intel Core i5 Broadwell processors."

Another possible reason for the delay is the low battery supply and struggles in achieving "good yields of the Retina display."

With the rumors of a June 2015 release, it appears Apple may have managed to get on top of manufacturing issues and finally launch the much-anticipated product.

Current MacBook Air variants are the 11.6-inch and the 13.3-inch models.
