Harmonix is reviving "Rock Band 4" to Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One gamers this year, IGN reported.

Harmonix Chief Creative Officer Alex Rigopulos told IGN: "When we stopped developing 'Rock Band 3' [in 2010], clearly the market needed a break. But since then we've been paying close attention to what our community has been saying about it. There's been this steadily growing crescendo of fans saying, 'Hey Harmonix, what the hell? It's time! Why haven't you announced a new Rock Band? We're ready for it!'"

Harmonix is working on creating drum and guitar controllers work with the new consoles, according to USA Today. They are planning on getting new songs, but previously downloaded songs can also be integrated.

"Since the beginning, we've called 'Rock Band' a music platform. Players responded by downloading hundreds of their favorite tracks, and building a massive library of playable music," said "Rock Band 4" product manager Daniel Sussman. "It's important for us to respect those purchases and enable our fans to bring that content over to the 'Rock Band' platform on new generation consoles."

The transfer of the old library to the new "Rock Band 4" will be free of charge.

Harmonix also highlighted that they felt they have an edge over their competitors.

"None of the games in the genre really delivered a lot of innovation, or maybe the right kind of innovation in the experience during that period," said Rigopulos.

According to Harmonix official blog, they are partnering with gaming accessories manufacturer Mad Catz this time.

Mad Catz CEO Darren Richardson expressed their excitement to work in this new project.

"Harmonix possesses unrivalled passion and vision for music gaming and we can't wait to introduce the next generation music platform to passionate gamers," Richardson said.

Harmonix Chief Executive Officer Steve Janiak said that they are "doubling down on the energy and excitement" of bring family and friends over while playing "Rock Band."

He added that aside from the improved hardware, they are also focusing on the "core experience" of the fans.

While waiting for the release, fans are offered free downloadable content for "Rock Band 3." Harmonix have released a couple of free tracks including "I Still Believe," by Frank Turner and hundreds of other songs.
