Samsung launched Galaxy S5 about a year ago. And now, the South Korean tech giant has issued the latest iteration of its flagship smartphone at this year's Mobile World Congress - the Galaxy S6.

With this new release, the question on whether the new model is indeed a true upgrade will no doubt swirl among fans and tech lovers. After all, the S5 had been slammed as a disappointment, selling "40% fewer than projected," as noted by The Verge. It was even labeled by Mashable as "the upgrade you can skip."

"While the GS5 is a well-performing device, it's hurt by Samsung's jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none approach," the tech news source said in its review. "The Galaxy S5... tries to power through on sheer quantity of features rather than quality."

Considering this, it should be pretty easy for Samsung to improve on the 2014 model and churn out something that would give Apple a run for its money and make consumers reach for their wallets.

And, with the unveiling of Galaxy S6, it looks like Samsung did things better this year.

"The newly launched Galaxy S6 is Samsung's most radical reinvention of its Galaxy S range to date," Forbes' Gordon Kelly said. "So is it enough?"

His answer? Right now, it's a "maybe."

"The Galaxy S6 is a handset so determined to break from the past that it takes risks which may alienate the millions of owners still loyal to the range. On the flip side there are also so many positive changes that the S6 may do enough to attract a whole new audience," he explained.

"The S6 doesn't really feel like the successor to the utilitarian S5, but rather the beginning of a new fashion range," Kelly went on to say. "Gone are numerous practical aspects of the S5 like the upgradeable storage, removable battery and covers and water resistance. The S6 also puts glass onto the rear which could backfire horribly."

He concluded by saying that the choice of getting an S6 would depend on your specific needs. If you're into the "design, speed and camera capabilities," the 2015 model is your best bet. But don't expect much from this phone when it comes to battery life, durability, and storage capacity, as the unit has a glass back and no microSD slot, which has long been one of the signature features of Samsung's flagship smartphones.

However, if you compare the specs and features of the S6 and S5, as what Gizmag did, you'll find that the S6 trumps last year's model on many points. The S6 is thinner, lighter, more stylish, has better display resolution, more responsive fingerprint sensor, faster processor, charges faster, has a bigger RAM, and a faster camera. However, as previously mentioned, the S6 has none of the microSD slot found on S5, as well as the waterproofing and removable battery feature.

Will S6 be a hit with consumers? Will it outperform the S5 in sales? TechRadar said that the Galaxy S5 may still remain a "tempting choice for many buyers, especially as it will be cheaper," and that it still has the essential microSD slot feature, among a few others.

We'll know for sure when April 10 - the day when S6 and S6 Edge will be available in stores - comes around.
