Months after an intersex claimed she was Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps' girlfriend, the athlete announced his engagement to on-and-off beauty queen girlfriend Nicole Johnson.
The swimmer took to Instagram Sunday to share the good news with the rest of the world.
"She said yes," read the caption that accompanied the photo showing the smiling lovers lying on the snow.
"The engagement comes as Phelps is finishing a six-month suspension from USA Swimming for his second drunken driving arrest," ESPN reported. "The suspension ends March 6, and he is expected to return to competition at Mesa, Arizona, in April."
It can be recalled that Michael was arrested on September 30 last year in Baltimore, Maryland for driving under the influence of alcohol.
"Phelps pleaded guilty to the DUI charge in December and was placed on probation by a judge, who warned, 'If you haven't gotten the message by now or forget the message, the only option is jail,'" the sports news source said.
He then proceeded to undergo a 45-day inpatient treatment program in Arizona and resumed therapy in Maryland, even joining Alcoholics Anonymous to ensure his recovery.
E! News noted that the couple have been dating on and off since meeting in 2007.
"In November 2010, Phelps took a break from training for the 2012 Olympics to join Johnson in Palm Springs, where she took part in the 2011 Miss California USA pageant to hand over her crown to the new winner, Alyssa Campanella," the entertainment news site said.
"Gold medallist swimmer Michael and Nicole's last break-up is believed to have been in 2012 before they rekindled their romance in November after he was released from rehab," MailOnline noted. "Previously it was reported that the former Subway pitchman had a sizzling romance in September with Taylor Lianne Chandler, an intersex blonde."
The publication described an intersex as "someone who had male genitalia, but no testicles, while also having a uterus and no ovaries."
The couple has not responded to the rumors involving the self-proclaimed intersex girlfriend.
Meanwhile, Nicole akcnowledged the engagement on her own Instagram, saying that she's "gonna be a Mrs.," E! News noted.
In the wake of this announcement, speculations on the couple's wedding date are sure to arise. Will it be after the 2016 Olympics?
Michael had gone into retirement after the 2012 Olympics, "saying he had no desire to keep swimming into his 30s and had accomplished all his goals," accoriding to ESPN.
However, he has returned to the competition circuit in 2013, until his suspension.
"Phelps is banned from this summer's world championships in Russia, the biggest meet heading into the 2016 Olympics, but is pressing forward with plans to compete at the Rio Games," the news source said.
