A tweet by 'American Psycho' author Bret Easton Ellis on Monday regarding the decision to hire Kelly Marcel as the '50 Shades of Grey' screenwriter caused a feud to erupt with one of the film's producers. (Photo : Twitter/ Screenshot)

Fans of the bestselling novel by British writer E.L. James received a new update regarding the film adaptation yesterday after it was announced that Kelly Marcel had been chosen as the film's screenwriter. The news, which was welcomed by some as progress in the production of the film, was not accepted by all though.

'American Psycho' author Bret Easton Ellis, who once expressed interest in adapting the book for film, took to Twitter to express his anger over Marcel's new position. "Kelly Marcel?!? KELLY MARCEL?!? Kelly Marcel is WRITING the script for "Fifty Shades of Grey"?!? THIS is the movie they want to make? ARGH," he tweeted Monday evening.

Ellis continued, "Kelly Marcel: the creator of (gulp) "Terra Nova" and a Mary Poppins bio-pic has been blessed by EL James and no one can stop her. Dear God."

According to E! News, '50 Shades of Grey' producer Dana Brunetti did not hold back and instead launched an all-out Twitter feud that included Ellis fans, Ellis haters and those who didn't like Ellis' latest film 'The Canyons.'

Brunetti responded to Ellis' second tweet by writing, "Really, Bret? The day you release that "trailer". School film? You're losing it..."

What followed was a barrage of tweets coming from fans on both sides of the argument. Brunetti retweeted fans reactions to Ellis' teaser trailer for 'The Canyons.' The feud, which appears to have been mostly between Brunetti and Ellis fans, left some claiming unprofessionalism by both Ellis and Brunetti.

Screenwriter Kelly Marcel, however, decided to stay out of the Twitter feud after the announcement was made. She did take some time to tweet, "Beyond thrilled to be jumping aboard the 50 Shades train. Very exciting!"

Casting rumors have consumed fans since the rights to the book were purchased by Universal Pictures and Focus Features earlier this year. Among those being hyped for the lead roles of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele are: Ian Somerhalder, Matt Bomer and Ryan Gosling as Christian Grey and Nina Dobrev, Emma Watson and Alexis Bledel as Anastasia Steele. A poll by Latinos Post found that off-screen couple and 'The Vampire Diaries' costars Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev are among the top fan favorites for the roles.

A timeline for production to start has not been given by the producers but Brunetti did tweet, "Again, writer then script then director then cast..."
