There's Princess Jasmine, Princess Tiana, Pocahontas, Mulan, and, in 2016, Princess Elena of Avalor.

This new character is the House of Mouse's first ever Latina Disney Princess. This representation of sorts may earn the applause of Hispanic audiences this time, as Princess Elena has that signature skin tone associated with Latinos.

"Princess Elena of Avalor, a confident and compassionate teenager in an enchanted fairytale kingdom inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore, will be introduced in a special episode of Disney Junior's hit series Sofia the First beginning production now for a 2016 premiere," Disney announced on its blog Thursday.

"That exciting story arc will usher in the 2016 launch of the animated series Elena of Avalor, a production of Disney Television Animation," the site added.

The entertainment company described the new princess as a 16-year-old "bold, caring, funny and clever ascendant to the throne in the fairytale kingdom of Avalor."

Time said that the character will be voiced by 26-year-old Aimee Carrero ("Young & Hungry").

"The story goes that Elena was imprisoned in the amulet by an evil sorceress, Shuriki, decades ago while Elena was trying to protect her little sister, Princess Isabel," the news source said.

After a couple of decades, Sofia learns of the truth and goes on to help Elena return to her human form and go back to her kingdom.

"Our creative team has delivered a universal story with themes that authentically reflect the hopes and dreams of our diverse audience," said Disney executive VP Nancy Kanter in a statement, as noted by E! News.

"What excites us most is the chance to use distinctive animation and visual design to tell wonderful stories influenced by culture and traditions that are familiar to the worldwide population of Hispanic and Latino families and reflect the interests and aspirations of all children as told through a classic fairy tale," she concluded.

The entertainment news outlet also went on to say that Princess Elena "will be advised on how to rule a whole kingdom by a grand council made up of her grandfather Tito, grandmother Cici, and a royal advisor named Duke Esteban."

That's not all - she'll also get help from a couple of friends, which include "a wizard-in-training named Mateo and a magical flying creature named Skylar."

In 2012, some Latinos made their displeasure known when Disney announced it was introducing its first Latina princess, Sofia.

"Some insisted Sofia looks 'too white' to actually be Latina, while others were angry toward Disney's decision not to emphasize Princess Sofia's Hispanic roots," Fox News reported.

Disney's Co-Executive Producer/Writer Craig Gerber responded to the backlash, saying that Sofia is "a mixed-heritage princess in a fairy-tale world."

"Her mother is originally from an enchanted kingdom inspired by Spain (Galdiz) and her birth father hailed from an enchanted kingdom inspired by Scandinavia," Gerber explained. "Sofia was born and raised in Enchancia, which is a make-believe 'melting pot' kingdom patterned on the British Isles."

"Sofia considers herself a normal Enchancian girl like any other. Her mixed heritage and blended family are a reflection of what many children today experience," he said.
