After more than 2 decades, this film is finally, really, truly happening. How do we know "Ghostbusters 3" is a sure deal? The film's director appeared to have revealed the all-women cast and release date of the long-awaited sequel on Twitter recently.

"Paul Feig, the director of the upcoming reboot, just took to Twitter to reveal his new cast," SuperHeroHype said. "Headlining the supernatural comedy are Kristen Wiig ('Bridesmaids,' 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty'), Melissa McCarthy ('The Heat,' 'Tammy'), Leslie Jones ('Saturday Night Live,' 'Top Five') and Kate McKinnon ('Saturday Night Live,' 'Life Partners')."

This cast only matches two of Bill Murray, original "Ghostbusters" cast member, recommendations, which he revealed to ScreenRant last year in September. He had picked McCarthy and Wiig, as well as Linda Cardinelli ("Mad Men") and Emma Stone ("The Amazing Spider-Man").

Did your own casting forecast match the actual one?

Feig's version of part three is "said to be targeting a scarier tone that will not maintain any continuity with the original film or its 1989 sequel." This means that the sequel will be a different movie altogether.

Previously, some observers have commented that the all-women cast is a "gimmick" - perhaps because Feig's recent body of work had women taking the lead roles, as is the case in "The Heat" and "Bridesmaids."

"Or maybe it's a snarky view at the rise of successful female-fronted films, like those and Lucy, The Hunger Games, Frozen and so on," CinemaBlend speculated. "Regardless, it's ludicrous to claim that fronting a movie with women is a gimmick."

However, according to the site, the all-women "Ghostbusters" idea was hatched before Feig even got involved with the sequel.

"Back in 2011, Dan Aykroyd, who has at times been 'Ghostbusters 3's lone cheerleader, spoke about who he'd like to see cast in the film," CinemaBlend revealed.

"We're going to need... three guys and a young woman," Aykroyd was quoted as saying.

"The script was reportedly revised following the death of Harold Ramis last February. Perhaps this is when one lone lady ghostbuster became several. But this might not in any way impact the established plot, which still remains a mystery," the entertainment news portal added.

Indeed, Feig has not commented further on his cast and release date announcements, even when fans sent their inquiries, ComicBook said.

"Like the original film, there will be four Ghosbusters as well as both a paranormal threat and a fully-human antagonist, according to rumors," the site noted.

It is worth noting that Murray has already announced he won't be returning for the sequel. Aykroyd, however, has said he will appear in the upcoming film, which will be in theaters July 22, 2016.
