Comic books and movie fans have a new reason to rejoice because of reports coming in that Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have reached an agreement for a crossover between Spider-Man and The Avengers, Movie Pilot reported.

The news originally came from Dave Gonzalez of Latino Review, who supposedly revealed a ton of insider information from Marvel Studios, such as the fates of Captain America and Thor and the news that Spider-Man is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 3, specifically the upcoming May 2018 "Avengers: Infinity War Part 1."

Before fans can rejoice though, a representative from Sony has released a statement via Comic Book Resources to clear up the speculations, saying that those were just rumors and nothing more.

Sony told CBR News the crossover was all "old rumors" and that it has "no validity whatsoever."

Many could point out however, that Sony's denial did not really completely shut down the possibility of a crossover. Only time will tell if such a thing will ever be possible.

Gonzalez's crossover news followed rumors that date back to October when speculations had it that both companies have been working on a deal to share the rights to the web-slinging hero. Reports even have it that they were aiming for an appearance in Marvel's 2016 film "Captain America: Civil War," according to CBR.

It only escalated some more after the Sony hacked emails debacle where copies of the emails hinted that Sony heads Amy Pascal and Doug Belgrad were considering offering a deal to Marvel to help boost the "Spider-Man" franchise.

Before Sony even denied the rumors, it was still an unlikely story to believe, according to Screen Crush. For one thing, the number of monetary and contractual issues that would arise from the discussions between the two massive companies would certainly take a lot of time and a lot of effort. Also, given the big news, both companies would definitely consider keeping the news a secret until they were ready to push through with the project.

Still, Gonzalez's news definitely fanned the flames of that rumor, even though Sony was quick to nip it in the bud. The Spidey rumor wasn't even half of what the writer shared, as he also claimed that Captain America is going to die at the end of "Civil War," Black Panther is introduced and both Iron Man and the Hulk are going to be "in space," meaning they could be dead.

The writer also claimed that Thor will kill a lot of Asgardians and end up in prison in the upcoming "Thor: Ragnarok," and that Doctor Strange could possibly lead the Avengers after Captain America's death.

Given Sony's denial of one report, the validity of the others remains questionable. Only time will tell if Gonzalez hit it on the mark or shot a mile wide.
