After a 16-hour standoff, the authorities managed to enter Lindt Chocolate Cafe at Martin Place in Sydney and rescue the hostages.

Unfortunately, among the 17 hostages, 2 of them died and were "later identified as Katrina Dawson, 38, and Tori Johnson, 34," CNN reported.

"Other people were injured, including a police officer who suffered a wound to the face from gunshot pellets. All were described by police to be in stable condition," the news source added.

The third casualty of the siege, the gunman himself, was identified to be Haron Monis - the "self-styled Muslim cleric" who inflicted terror in his hostages and in the community where the hostage-taking took place.

Who was Haron Monis? Here are 5 things we know about him:

He's Got a Long History of Crime

"He had a long history of violent crime, infatuation with extremism and mental instability," said Australian Prime Minister Tony Abott in a press briefing, according to ABC.net.au. "We know that he sent offensive letters to the families of Australian soldiers killed in Afghanistan and was found guilty of offences related to this."

"We also know that he posted graphic extremist material online. As the siege unfolded yesterday, he sought to cloak his actions with the symbolism of the ISIL death cult," the Australian leader added.

In addition, he had been "charged with more than 50 allegations of indecent and sexual assault."

He's an Emigrant

The 50-year-old Iran-born gunman "arrived in Australia in 1996 as a refugee," the Sydney Morning Herald said. The recent siege has prompted former Prime Minsiter Kevin Rudd to "review Australia's immigration laws."

He's a Lone Wolf

"Monis declared himself independent of any affiliations with known terrorist organizations," Time said. "Police have identified him as a 'lone' actor and believe that the hostage plot began and ended with him." However, this kind of situation has warranted additional vigilance on plots that may be "hatched in isolation by lone radicals."

He's a Muslim

He was born Manteghi Bourjerdi and was later known as Mohammad Hassan Manteghi, The Guardian said. "He had converted from Shia to Sunni Islam and pledged his allegiance to the caliphate declared by the militant group Islamic State."

His Wife Was Killed a Year before the Hostage Situation

"In November 2013, Amirah Droudis was charged with the murder of Monis' former wife, Noleen Hayson Pal. She had been stabbed and burned alive. Monis was charged as being an accessory in the case," Heavy said.
