Microsoft's Xbox One has outsold Sony's PS4 console.
Sony PS4 has consistently dominated the console market since its launch last year, however, Forbes reported that due to price cut, redesigned console, and some free games, the two switched places last month, putting Microsoft's Xbox One on top of the list.
Forbes noted that this is the first time that Microsoft's Xbox One outsold Sony's PS4 in the United States.
"We are committed to making Xbox the best place to play, with this year's best games, the best community of gamers to play with, and terrific value. And we are amazed by the excitement Xbox fans have shown to start off this holiday," Microsoft's Corporate Vice President of Xbox Marketing Mike Nichols was quoted in the report.
Nichols revealed that the month of November was really big for them after it set a new record sales for the said console. He then thanked Xbox users who showed support by playing and buying more.
"November set a new record for sales of Xbox One, and Xbox One was the best-selling console in the US and UK. Response to the holiday lineup of games on Xbox One was incredible, with Xbox One fans buying more games in November in the U.S. than any other gen eight platform and enjoying over 357 million hours of gameplay globally," he was quoted as saying.
He also revealed that the month of November also set the highest number of players logging into Xbox Live.
"In fact, more fans logged into Xbox Live across Xbox One and Xbox 360, and enjoyed more entertainment, than any other month in the history of Xbox. We love to see the excitement from our fans and are grateful for their passion, support and contributions to the Xbox community," he said.
According to the report of Geekwire, Xbox One sales in the US in November soared to 1.2 million units. It said that this may be result of the holiday sale.
It is unknown how much other consoles sold during the month but the report citing the NPD market research firm said that the total sales from video games has dropped by at least 23 percent to $1 billion in November. The decline, it noted, was a result of the discounts.
NPD analyst Liam Callahan was quoted in the Geekwire report saying, "While the majority of the decrease in dollar sales of hardware stemmed from an expected drop of seventh generation console sales, eighth generation sales also decreased and represented 38 percent of the total declines in hardware sales from November 2013 to November 2014...Despite a decline in dollar sales, hardware unit sales for eighth generation consoles increased by 3 percent over November 2013."
Last November, Microsoft announced that it "shortly" it will be able to ship 10 million Xbox One consoles, three months after Sony revealed that it had already sold 10 million PS4 units, The Verge reported.
The report added that Sony PS4 has outsold Xbox One for "nine consecutive months with a total of 13.5 million units." However, Microsoft continues to be optimistic. Microsoft's devices and studios chief Yusuf Mehdi even claimed that they can dominate Sony especially now that the busy holiday season has already kicked in.
In the same The Verge report, Mehdi admitted that the boost on the Xbox One sales was mainly due to the $50 price cut they implemented. "Sales have skyrocketed since the new price took effect...Compared to the previous week, Xbox One sales in the US have more than tripled," he was quoted as saying.
