Known as the 'Dama de Cao,' the young ruler governed her people over 1,600 years ago and was recently discovered in Cao Viejo, Peru.
The discovery not only unearthed valuable information about this puzzling female ruler, but also gave archaeologist an important window to the Moche Civilization and its social, political and religious way of life.
According to Nat Geo Mundo, 'la Dama de Cao,' who died at the young age of 25, played an essential role in her society. The discovery of her mummy, in near perfect condition, allowed the international archaeological community to better understand the roles women played in the ancient civilization.
