One of the most popular installments of the "Final Fantasy" franchise is set to release on the PlayStation 4.

In a report by IGN.com, "Final Fantasy VII" will be released on the PS4 in the spring of 2015.

At the 2014 PlayStation Experience on December 7, 2014, Shinji Hashimoto, producer of Square Enix, developer and distributor of the "Final Fantasy" series, announced the return of the classic role-playing game during his keynote speech.

In a report by Kotaku.com, FF7 fans have been asking for a remake of the game for almost two decades. Similar to the PC edition released a few years ago, the "Final Fantasy VII" will have upscaled graphics. However, gamers should not expect an HD remake. The characters and environment will feature the same blocky appearance just like how PlayStation One users experienced the game in the 1990s.

Hashimoto provided a brief presentation on the PS4 Final Fantasy VII release, showing that it will be the same as the PC version. In another report by Kotaku.com, several gamers were actually disappointed that Hashimoto did not come up with new developments on the PS4 version. Some even expected a total remake or a sequel.

After the official announcement of the "Final Fantasy VII" on PS4, Kotaku initiated a Shop Contest, which features the two big screens, a stage and Shinji Hashimoto.

Forbes.com reported that the upcoming version will most likely be based on the recent and well-made PC port featured a few years back. As a result, gamers will have the game run in its native PC resolution, which is better than the original. The business magazine wrote that one of the main reasons why Final Fantasy VII has not been remade was because previous HD remakes of original games turned out to be bad. Some gamers would prefer to keep a classic game in its original form and go through the same storyline, instead of removing the value of a much-beloved game in exchange for better graphics.

In the same Forbes report, some gamers suggest that Sony begin introducing archive games on the PlayStation 4. They should also further offer free software emulation services to cater to old games. According to some gamers, remaking a classic wholesale will only weaken the medium completely.

Square Enix seems to understand the dangers involved in remaking a classic hit into HD form. Game developers should instead focus on improving the quality and storylines of modern games, taking into account some of their most successful works, such as "Final Fantasy VII."
