In an exclusive interview with BBC News, "The Lego Movie" writers and directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller revealed that the sequel will feature more female characters.

"I don't want to give spoilers but there will be more female characters and more female stuff," Miller was quoted as saying in a BBC News report.

However, he did not disclose if the sequel will have a female lead role.

Lord, for his part, said that they are always aiming to write and direct movies that have impact and can inspire young women.

The two are also known for their part in other hit movies such as "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," "21 Jump Street," "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2," and "22 Jump Street."

"You can feel that the whole movie culture is now starting to wake up to the fact that half the audience are women...'Frozen' is reflective of that - and I think we are all going to find a great flourishing of women film makers and subject matter in the future," he was quoted as saying.

Miller also noted that most movies in the past have centered on male protagonists and there is a "real shortage" of female protagonists. But he said that he sees future to be "very different."

In August, the Lego toy company launched a set consisting of three female figues that included a paleontologist, an astronomer, and a chemist.

The sequel is said to be written by Jared Stern and Michelle Morgan, as reported by Screenrant.

The rumor was also confirmed by Cinemablend, listing the two as the sequel's writers. The report also noted that the movie will not be directed by Lord and Miller but they have passed it to Chris McKay. This was further confirmed by an exclusive report by Deadline. McKay is the animation co-director of the first "Lego Movie." It revealed that Lord and Miller will instead be the sequel's producers.

Variety said that McKay will also be directing the spin-off film "The Lego Batman Movie" which is expected to be released in 2017. Another Lego spin-off is to be released in 2016 titled "Ninjago."

Cinemablend said "The Lego Movie 2" will be released on May 26, 2017 under Warner Bros. Pictures. But BBC and Variety said it is expected to be released in 2018. None of these has been confirmed.

"The Lego Movie" which centered on construction worker Emmet Brickowski and his love interest Wyldestyle earned $468 million.
