It's crunch time for parents of trick-or-treating kids as Halloween is a mere day away. You want your little one to have that serious scare factor that will spook onlookers - and earn your child a nifty stash of sweet treats. What could be the best scary ones that you can DIY?

Here are our suggestions:

Samara

The look of this character from horror movie "The Ring" is pretty easy to pull off, especially if your child already has long hair. If not, get a long, black wig and use a white nightgown having long sleeves. You can apply white makeup on the face and smear black or brown eye shadow all over the eyes for a more striking effect. You can leave out the white foundation and just go with the dark eyeshadow.

Smudge some brown shadow or cream makeup on the gown to make it look dirty, as if coming from the grave. You can even stick a few dry leaves on strategic areas, if you want.

See to it that the wig is arranged so that it is parted right in the middle and covers most of your kid's face so only a sliver is showing. Coach your kid to move slowly and eerily to amp the scary effect. Here's the full instructions.

Headless Character

Any will do, as long as it's sans a head. It can be a headless zombie, headless clown, headless pirate, or a headless animated movie character. To know how to make this clever costume, check out this page.

Injured Zombie

You can use your kid's usual clothes, smearing dark eyeshadow on them to make them look dirty. Add some red for blood. Use props, like big scissors, a toy knife, or axe, and attach it onto your child's head so it looks like the kid's been stabbed, when in fact the lower half of the prop is simply hidden in the hair. Follow these steps to pull off the look described. You can use an eggwhite-and-flour mixture instead of latex, to create wounds and other effects on the face. Then watch people gasp at the effect.

Multiple Eyes

This look heavily depends on the makeup. You just simply deck out your child in black and have his or her hair down and a little messy. However, you'll need ample time to do the face, as well as fake eye lashes and some white and blue face paint. You may also need to mix colors to get the right shade of green for the base. Follow these tips to get the look.
