Halloween is practically days away, and amidst costume brainstorming sessions, Halloween party preparations, and pumpkin carving adventures, you're thinking of getting your hands on scary apps to entertain you in time for the annual scare-fest.

With that, here are 5 apps that could very well be the scariest of its kind in the world.

Limbo

"With subtle, eerie music and skin-crawling sound effects, the audio alone is enough to make your pulse race while you guide a little boy through a dark world hell-bent on stopping him from rescuing his sister," Time said. This black-and-white game has been a hit among many iOS users, despite the fact that it's actually not free - a testament to its entertaining scare factor.

Silent Hill: The Escape

This one can now be played on your iPhone and not just on PlayStation. Despite the mobile-fied version, it's still "snappy" and "responsive," plus it also "still manages to bring the creepiness to the front," Paste said. It's only $.99 and is worth the buy, considering its eeriness and scary visuals.

Dark Meadow: The Pact

This game has "a post-apocalyptic setting with a surprising fairy-tale twist," as noted in HubPages. "You will be fighting bloodthirsty goblins roaming the dilapidated halls of an abandoned hospital, seeking the warm blood of the living. More fear strikes as you encounter a witch, and eliminating her is the only way to escape the hospital," the site added.

According to PocketMeta, this app is "the best horror/thriller game on the mobile market," especially when you consider the fact that this is actually free on iOS and Android. Double wow!

The Abandoned School

This is another app you can play on iOS or Android devices. You can amp the scary factor up when you use headphones, as the "music and the amazing photorealistic visuals can really send chills down your spine," as mentioned in HubPages. Yes, everything may only be in two colors (black and white, of course), with the occasional red, but this palette still brings eeriness to the game.

Hysteria Project 2

This game has been around for a while, but it still does its work in giving users a scare. "It combines real HD footage with puzzles that will pick your brain in what is one terrifying game," PhoneArena said. Only available for iPhones, this adventure horror game also uses the device's motion sensor, allowing you to scope out the surroundings at 360 degrees.

As noted in HubPages, "The horror is more psychological than that of the traditional horror game. You not only have to encounter scary characters, but also have to pass through laser traps and flame snares."
