Disney announced Monday that a new animated film will be released in 2016. Nope, not "Frozen 2," but "Moana."

"The film tells the story of Moana, a spirited teenager on an impossible mission to fulfill her ancestors' quest," explained Disney's blog. "It's set in the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania, and Moana, a born navigator, sets sail in search of a fabled island."

Along the way, she gets help from demi-god Maui in sailing through the open ocean and encounters "enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore."

Sounds like a fun (and original) adventure! By the looks of it, "Moana" could very well be a better alternative than a "Frozen" sequel. Here's why:

It's Got a Female-Centric Story

"Not only is Moana a female-centric animated adventure, but it is actually named for said female title character," Forbes noted. This somehow mirrors what the studio did for "Frozen," which included not one but two female lead characters and was even directed by a female. However, what gives it more edge is the fact that it appears to be an original story and character. It doesn't hurt that it is riding on the success of recent slew of Disney female-centric movie themes, making it a likely winner in the box office stakes. The choice of character gender also obviously pleases female moviephiles young and old, as well as males, thanks to the addition of the adventure component in the equation.

It Involves a Non-Caucasian Heroine

The fact that Moana is a Polynesian princess would make advocates of racial diversity clap as it affirms the non-Caucasian members of the global population. This aspect makes the film appear more inclusive, which can translate into a bigger fan base and viewer turnout.

It's Directed by the Makers of Previous Disney Hits

The flick will be directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, who are the Oscar-nominated filmmakers behind "Aladdin" and "The Little Mermaid," IGN noted.

"Creating Moana is one of the great thrills of our career. It's a big adventure set in this beautiful world of Oceania," Clements was quoted as saying by the site.

"Moana is indomitable, passionate and a dreamer with a unique connection to the ocean itself," Musker explained. "She's the kind of character we all root for, and we can't wait to introduce her to audiences."

Sounds like they do love the character!

It Promises a Bigger Spectacle

So far, only one image has been released by Disney in relation to "Moana." However, by the looks of it, the concept art appears to promise gorgeous visuals that is the signature of "Frozen." However, since there will be folklore involved, as well as huge sea creatures and underworlds, we're thinking there will be more breathtaking sea and landscapes, not to mention awe-inspiring oceanic phenomenon that would likely involve more colors and effects than, say, "Frozen."

It Already Has a Following

Back in January this year, it was reported that early rumors of "Moana" have spawned a "very lively fandom" of the new, upcoming Disney princess. According to Daily Dot, fans have already shared their own interpretations of the titular character on social media, ranging "from cute, ukulele-playing girly-girl to tough, muscular sailor."

Come 2016, this wave of "Moana" fans may very well turn into a tsunami of eager viewers.
