The biggest update in the history of PlayStation is coming to PlayStation 4, with its System Update 2.0.

Codenamed Masamune, PS4's System Update 2.0 comes with new features including Share Play, YouTube support, and Themes, says the PlayStation Blog.

The name was derived from a popular Japanese swordsmith in the late 13th century and early 14th century, reports Time.

Scott McCarthy, Director for Product Planning and Software Innovation of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said (via the Playstation Blog): "We listen to our fans. PlayStation has heard gamers when they say they want more ways to find friends, and more ways to personalize their PS4."

"With the PS4 System Update 2.0, we've added a Players You May Know file, the ability to listen to your music while playing, the option to change the look of your PS4, and easier ways to sort and filter the PS4's library of content," McCarthy explained.

When will it be released?

Meanwhile a few fans posted questions on the blog like, "any idea on a date for the 2.00 update" and "STAY TUNED for more information?! How much longer do we have to wait?! I mean props for listening to us and finally giving us content that we want, but we need more transparency on firmware release windows."

McCarthy readily answered them and said, "We have not yet announced a date. That said we don't want you guys playing some of the biggest games of the year without the biggest update of the year." He added, We don't want to make promises we can't keep. Timing will be confirmed when there's no chance of it changing. We really do have you guys in mind when we make these kinds of timing decisions."

But Time's report hints that it would be available "later this fall" possibly around December 21 or earlier.

New Features

The International Business Times detailed the new features of PS4 System Update 2.0 including:

1. USB Music Player  - This enables players to listen to their preferred music in various files including MP3, MP4, MA4 and 3GP while playing the game.

2. Change Colors - PS4 can change the background color of the homescreen.

3. Players You May Know - A part of the 'What's New' section, it recommends players as potential friends.

4. Enhancements to Live Broadcasting - There are new broadcasting channels and filters.

5. Content Area and Library - Makes it easier for players to quickly find and access the most used apps or games. The library also has improved filtering and sorting functions to ensure an organized content.

6. Enhancement Voice Commands - The PlayStation 4 now has a voice command option from players

7. Add to Library - There is a new Add to Library button in the PlayStation Store which adds a game to owner's library without having to download the app.

Download

The PlayStation 4 System Update 2.0 will likely become downloadable for free from the PlayStation Store on its official release date.

The Playstation Blog said that PS Vita and PS TV systems will likewise get a systems software update to version 3.35 about the same time as the Masamune.

"PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets, which would be available for free on the App Store and Google Play, will also have an update to version 2.0 at about the same time as the PS4 and PS Vita," the Playstation Blog added.
