'Tetris' Movie Will be a 'Very Big, Epic Sci-Fi Film'

After "Prince of Persia," "Resident Evil," and "Need for Speed," comes another film based on video games, and this one is a classic.

The Wall Street Journal has confirmed that a Tetris movie is in the works and it's going to be an epic Sci Fi.

According to the report, Threshold Entertainment has teamed up with the Tetris company to make a film based on the game.

So far, no cast or director has been appointed yet, the Wall Street Journal added, but the story is already in the works, which means that this may actually happen.

Threshold's CEO, Larry Kasanoff said, "It's a very big, epic sci-fi movie. This isn't a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page. We're not giving feet to the geometric shapes."

Rolling Stone is  more skeptical about the film, though, saying that the floating puzzle piece game made popular with the Game Boy in the 1980s is less likely to be a success than any video game-turned-film with race cars, zombies, and villains.

Kasanoff is reportedly not too worried about how this may play out, because let's face it, Tetris is a classic: simple but highly addictive. He feels that star power matters very much in Hollywood, saying that "Brands are the new stars of Hollywood. We have a story behind 'Tetris' which makes it a much more imaginative thing."

He also told the Wall Street Journal that there is more to the game that it seemed, noting that what players do know about Tetris is only the "teeny tip of an iceberg that has intergalactic significance."

If the movie turns out to be a success, there are bigger plans in store for the brand. He teased, "We certainly have the canvas for location-based entertainment based on the epicness."

Does that mean that there's going to be Tetris-land someday? Kasanoff did not expound on that, though, but who knows, that just might work.

Entertainment Weekly is more cynical of the outcome than Kasanoff, saying that a good video game may forever be ruined when turned to a movie.

Even videogame fans were a bit miffed about the decision, citing other games that could have made for better films.

A reader from EW with the handle, "Ronny," said, "Of all the classic games you could choose to make a movie about (contra, legend of Zelda, or mega man) they go with Tetris. I feel like Hollywood been smoking to much yay. What's next, frogger, echo or duck hunt?"

Another, under the handle, "Heehaw," made a point by saying, "Put some kids under the falling blocks and call it Maze Runner 2."

But Hollywood was able to make a movie out of Battleship (it's "Pacific Rim", by the way) so who knows how this will turn out?
