While the Wii U and Grand Theft Auto may be the biggest trends in the video game world, one major title has not gone unnoticed.

Resident Evil 6, the latest installment in the survival horror-action franchise, is slated for a October 2 release, but developer Capcom plans to have fans playing the game weeks before with a demo due to be released on September 18th.

"Players will be able to dive into content from Resident Evil 6's three main campaigns, either solo or partnering up via online co-op, and experience firsthand why it is one of this year's most hotly anticipated titles."

The demo will be available on Xbox LIVE and the Playstation Store. The demo will enable players to test out content from Resident Evil 6's three main campaigns as a single player and even by partnering up via online co-op.

The series follows the story of a zombie outbreak in Raccoon City USA. Eventually, it escalates into a worldwide phenomenon with pharmaceutical companies battling over control of bio weapons. The latest installment (which is actually the 20th or so title in the long running franchise) presents an apocalyptic world in which the zombie outbreak has spanned the globe. Players are placed into the roles of longtime franchise stalwarts Chris Redfield and Leon Kennedy as well as newcomer Jake Muller. The game also includes blending of the series' different genres throughout the campaigns. In some instances, the game reverts to its survival horror roots (the first Resident Evil popularized survival horror) before turning into an all out action game popularized by more recent entries Resident Evil 4 and 5.

According to recent reports from Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, the game will feature a fourth campaign in which gamers play as Ada Wong, long time anti-hero of the franchise. This campaign will provide the missing pieces left by the other three campaigns. The game will also feature Residentevil.net, an online service which allows Capcom to hold events to reward games with in-game items and upgrades. Players will be able to obtain points for certain missions that Capcom sets them on and then redeem the points for the latest goodies.

October 2 is the day when Resident Evil fans will be able to experience the latest installment in the survival horror action franchise. It will be available for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. No word on whether it will eventually make its way to Nintendo's Wii U system.
