Microsoft purposely skipped numbers in naming the next version of their operating system to represent the great leaps they have made in the latest offering.

According to the tech company, calling the upcoming version Windows 10 "represents such a significant leap over Windows 8 that calling it Windows 9 would not do it justice," Forbes noted.

Perhaps this explanation will earn raised brows or incredulous groans, but based from Mashable analyst Lance Ulanoff's observation, it looks like Microsoft has finally got it right with the upcoming OS version.

"I think businesses are going to like Windows 10," Ulanoff said. "By reintroducing the start menu, adding easy-to-access multiple desktops and even giving the Command Prompt its first upgrade in years, Microsoft is doing more than paying lip service to a disenfranchised business customer - it's delivering what could be the best Windows for business ever."

Sounds very promising indeed. In connection with this, we've round up the top 5 features of Windows 10, as follows:

It's Designed to Run on All Devices

Pundits have begun calling the new Microsoft OS as "the one OS to rule them all." That's because it "is being designed to run across all device form factors," Forbes noted. "That means desktops, laptops, tablets, phablets and smartphones."

Perhaps they have to thank Steve Jobs for that innovation.

According to Microsoft Executive VP of Operating Systems, Terry Myerson, Windows 10 will give "a tailored experience for each device."

"There will be one way to write a universal application, one store, one way for apps to be discovered purchased and updated across all of these devices," he revealed.

There will also be Universal Windows apps, which were previously known as the Metro apps/Windows Store apps.

The Start Button and Menu Will Be Back

A collective groan was heard round the world with the disappearance of the familiar Start button in Windows 8. Microsoft reintroduced it in 8.1, but without the Menu that Windows users know and love like a "warm blanket," as Mashable noted. Thankfully, the Start button and Menu will be returning in Windows 10, albeit with some new twists.

"It brings some features from the Windows 8.1 Start Screen, such as live tiles, and can be resized," TechRadar said.

There's a Multiple Desktop Feature

You can create various desktops for different projects and shift between these pretty easily. This feature is also known as "Task View."

"Microsoft now recognises that novice users use the taskbar rather than switching in other, cleverer, ways such as Alt+Tab (which also now switches between desktops)," TechRadar noted.

It's Got Continuum

This allows users to "switch between touch interfaces and non-touch environments," The Verge reported. "This interface was built specifically for devices such as the Surface Pro 3 and Lenovo Yoga, which have users switching between touch and non-touch interfaces often."

This means the device will help you detect the absence of a keyboard and let you navigate the Desktop with touchscreen features.

Snap Assist Just Got a Bit Better

The new version helps you determine the best way to snap apps to. "You can snap windows into new screens and tile Windows - just as you've been able to since Windows 2.0 or maybe 3.0," TechRadar said.

Microsoft's Windows 10 will probably be released "later in 2015," Forbes said.
