Set during the time of Bruce Wayne's childhood and James Gordon's rookie days, Fox's new series titled "Gotham" will be the next treat for Batman die-hards, reports the New York Daily.

Starring "The OC" alum Brian McKenzie as the younger Gordon, the series will serve as an origin story for the character of Batman.

Despite the possibility of being just another cop story, the New York Daily claims that looking good is what sets this series apart from its CSI and NCIS counterparts. Its semi-mythic city "shimmers with menace and beauty," which is a sight all on its own.

Variety, however, notes that this origin series has been done, saying that there is no way not to compare "Gotham" to "Marvel's Agents of SHIELD," which premiered last year.

Despite comparison issues, the magazine admits that there is money in it for DC and Warner Bros., noting that by setting the story as a prelude to everything we already know about Batman, it will not complicate storylines of the characters, should there be a DC adaptation to rival Marvel's already dominant characters in superhero features.

Business Insider reports that the series will not only serve as Bruce Wayne's origin series, but the origins of Batman's future enemies as well. The website said that Fox has revealed some characters that will be making appearances in "Gotham" from the main Batman canon.

These characters include Selina Kyle, the future Catwoman; Edward Nygma, the future Riddler; and Oswald Cobblepot, the future Penguin.

Even without Batman's major nemesis, Joker, in the mix, the show's producer is not going to limit the possibilities as to the potential villains in the series. Executive producer Bruno Heller said, "We haven't excluded anyone from the mix potentially, but generally what we're looking at is characters where there is some drama or a story behind how they got to be the way they are.

"We're looking for characters who live in the real world of Gotham as opposed to the even more super real world of Metropolis if you like. It's not about super powers, it's about super will, if you like. We veer towards those characters who are interesting as people, rather than interesting for their particular power or their particular gimmick or their costume."

Considering that Batman is part of the Justice League, Business Insider suggests that Heller may have been dropping hints at the future appearance of another JL hero, Clark Kent (aka Superman), but that still remains to be seen.

"Gotham" premieres on Monday at 9 p.m. on Fox.
