Topless Women Protest in Texas for Equality [Watch Video Here]

There are basic human rights, and then there's the right to go topless, according to a group of bare-chested individuals seeking for the latter.

Sunday afternoon turned to be more than just a lazy day in San Antonio, Texas, as about 30 people took to the streets to rally for "the right to bare their bosoms in public," according to MySantAntonio.com.

"The Texas protests were part of a broader effort according to organizers, who said there were similar events in at least 50 other cities around the world," the site said. "The women at the San Antonio rally did not go entirely topless, electing to wear tape over their nipples. A city ordinance prohibits women from exposing their breasts in public."

Prior to Sunday's demonstration, the San Antonio Current had reported that August 24 is actually the annual GoTopless Day, now on its seventh year. In celebration of such occasion, women in various cities around the globe (up to 60) will advocate for the right to "be able to walk around with their breasts unencumbered by the confines of clothing" by walking about sans tops on that day.

"Equal topless rights for women is a constitutional right. The 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution specifies equal rights for everyone. That includes the right to expose body parts common to both genders, including the chest and nipples," a New York GoTopless organizer explained.

According to the GoTopless Day website, August 24 is "the Sunday closest to Women's Equality Day, Aug 26," which is why it has been designated as the day when advocates of the topless movement show their support for the cause.

"It is indeed on Aug 26, 1920 that women earned their right to vote on the basis of Gender Equality," the site explained. "In 1971, the US Congress has made Aug 26 into a nationally recognized date and named it 'Women's Equality Day.'"

Meanwhile, in Austin, Texas, "More than a dozen women and some men protested outside the Texas State Capitol on Sunday afternoon," KVUE reported. "Holding signs and waving at cars as they drove by, protesters stood, topless, with some surprised onlookers snapping photos."

"The news source pointed out that toplessness is allowed in Austin, hence the bare-chested appearance of the Austin-based protesters," the news source added.

"Last month, topless women and open carry gun advocates clashed in Austin, Texas. The city is home to the only official nude beach in the state - Hippie Hollow Park," Inquisitr recalled.
