We've heard a lot of rumors about the upcoming iPhone 6, specifically the 4.7-inch model, which is allegedly just one of two versions of the newest iteration of Apple's smartphone. There have been unconfirmed reports about the screen size, thinness, and other features. However, these were mostly for the 4.7-inch model. What about the 5.5-inch variant?

"Looking at the dozen or so rumors about the extra-large iPhone, there's little consensus on when the phone would arrive, how it would differ from the 4.7-inch iPhone and what the larger screen would mean for apps and software," Time pointed out. "Until we get answers to more of these questions, it's foolish to assume an iPhone 'phablet is imminent."

Recently, Tech Times reported that "Apple's upcoming 4.7-inch iPhone 6 has entered mass production." Meanwhile, according to the same site, production for the 5.5-inch model, as well as iPad Air 2 and the upgraded iPad mini with Retina display, will start in September.

Should this bit of news be reassuring enough to convince you that there will indeed be an iPhone "phablet"? If you ask Ming-Chi Kuo, KGI Securities analyst, he would say no.

"According to Kuo, Apple is already facing production bottlenecks on the 4.7-inch model related to the new technology for the device's in-cell touch panel, as well as color unevenness on the redesigned 'iPhone 6' metal casing," AppleInsider noted. "Those problems are said to be even worse with the larger 5.5-inch model."

The analyst, who is one of the more reliable pundits on predicting Apple's future products considering his track record, also said that the "most conservative scenario" is a 2015 release of the 5.5-inch "iPhone 6" model.

"In that situation, he expects a larger 4.7-inch model along with more affordable iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c models will spur Apple to sales growth in the holiday quarter, meaning a later-than-expected launch for the rumored product would not have much of an effect on the company's bottom line," AppleInsider added.

Time also mentioned the issue of Apple adapting the screen resolution of the rumored phablet to a larger display. "It's unlikely that Apple would stretch the screen without increasing the number pixels as well, but there hasn't been much discussion to address this issue," the news source said.

If you want to avoid disappointment, consider looking elsewhere for phablet options. That is, if you can't wait until next year to own such a device. But if you believe the wait is worth it, you may have to extend your patience until next year.
