The Bellas went and saved the day, as protagonists mostly do, in "Pitch Perfect." But, will the gals be able to repeat the musical feat in the sequel?
The hit musical comedy film will be back to give fans a second helping of its awesome goodness, with a good number of the old cast members coming back in the second installment. And there'll be new faces - and a "new main rival" - too.
"The Bellas have a new main rival this time around, and I will not say who they are. They've gotten too big for their britches, possibly literally. And they've sort of forgotten about the music a little bit," revealed Elizabeth Banks, who will embark on her first directing gig through "Pitch Perfect 2," The Hollywood Reporter said. In the previous movie, Banks served as the project's producer and co-creator.
Not long after this revelation, it was announced that The Filharmonic will be joining the cast in the sequel and giving The Bellas more reasons to shape up and practice harder.
"We thought the Bellas and the Trebles needed some competition. Meet the gentlemen of The Filharmonic. They'll be joining the 'Pitch Perfect 2' team," Banks announced on her official website.
The six-member group, composed of VJ Rosales, Joe Caigoy, Trace Gaynor, Barry Fortgang, Jules Cruz, and Niko Del Rey, was described by THR as "an a cappella group most recently seen on reality competition 'The Sing-Off."
"The Filharmonic's style is described as an urbanesque hip-hop sound with '90s nostalgia. The all-male group is linked through their Filipino heritage and their passion for a wide variety of performance styles including pop, a cappella, jazz, opera, theater and classical," the entertainment news source continued.
"The group captured audiences with their performance style that includes elements of pop, a cappella, jazz, opera, theater and classical," ET reported. From the looks of them, they appear to serve as fitting masculine foils to the female champs. Will there be rivalry or romance? Or both?
The Filharmonic is not the only new addition to the sequel. Katey Sagal and Hailee Steinfeld will reportedly be joining Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, and Anna Camp in part two.
Details about the much-anticipated follow up to the 2012 hit are quite slow in coming, as the cast and crew are understandably careful about not letting too many spoilers out. After all, the film is not going to be released until May 15, 2014. So far, some on-set photos have been teased on social media accounts of some of the cast members, revealing what some of the hair and costumes would look like in the sequel.
