As BBC lets fans await the return of the fictional eccentric detective from Baker Street, famously played by Benedict Cumberbatch, a new film, "Mr. Holmes," attempts to fill the void. In the future, how will an aging Sherlock Holmes solve a mystery?

Enter Sir Ian McKellan. The 75-year-old thespian has joined the league of actors who have played the Arthur Conan Doyle character.  Cumberbatch, Jonny Lee Miller, Robert Downey Jr., Sir Christopher Lee, Frank Langella, Peter O'Toole, Charlton Heston and Jonathan Pryce are some of the stars who have portrayed the celebrated detective.

On McKellan's latest Twitter post, the actor shared a photo of him in character as the lovable 93-year-old sleuth in "Mr. Holmes."

His tweet read, "Over 70 actors have previously played Sherlock Holmes. Now he's 93 years old and it's my turn. #MrHolmes"

Daily Mail reported that the movie will be focusing on the detective, who is retired and living a quiet life in a remote Sussex farmhouse with a housekeeper (Laura Linney) and her young son. The adaptation is based on the 2005 novel by Mitch Cullin titled "A Slight Trick of the Mind."

Variety provided the synopsis of the story, which read, "The pic is set in 1947, when an aging Holmes returns from a journey to Japan, where, in search of a rare plant with restorative qualities, he has witnessed the devastation of nuclear warfare. Now, in his remote seaside farmhouse, Holmes faces the end of his days, tending to his bees, with only the company of his housekeeper and her young son, Roger. Grappling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon the boy as he revisits the circumstances of the unsolved case that forced him into retirement, and searches for answers to the mysteries of life and love - before it's too late."

Fans should be excited about Mckellan's upcoming movie, as the film will be produced by the people behind the Academy Award-winning drama "The King's Speech." TotalFilm said "Mr. Holmes" will be directed by Bill Condon and will be released in the U.K. next year.
