Looks like movie adaptations remain the rage for the last couple of years (and running). Aside from the "Power Rangers", "G.I. Joe", "The Smurfs", and "Lego", "Sonic the Hedgehog" is now going to have his very own big screen feature, thanks to Sony Pictures and Sega, Mashable reported.

"The feature-length film will be a CG-animated/ live-action hybrid, and would pit the irreverent spiny mammal with blazing speed against familiar franchise baddies including Dr. Eggman, the studio announced Tuesday," the tech news site revealed.

Van Robichaux and Evan Susser have reportedly been hired to write the script under Neal H. Moritz, who also was one of the producers behind the "Fast and Furious" franchise. Andrea Giannetti and hannah Minghella will be overseeing the project, Variety said.

"There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog, and a built-in international fanbase," Minghella shared in a statement. "Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we're looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before."

Masanao Maeda, CEO of Marza, the Japanese CG animation production firm co-producing the movie, added that after having "dozens of adventures on the console and the small screen," the prospect of bringing him to the big screen is a thrilling highlight to his adventurous saga. "We're confident that this collaboration will bring a fresh take to Sonic, while still capturing everything that the fans love about him," Maeda said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Right now, "Sonic" is a "$1 billion property that already has a Cartoon Network TV show," Mashable observed. "While a 'Sonic' movie comes with a built-in fanbase, it's too early to tell at this stage whether we'll actually ever get a 'Sonic' movie, or what it might look like."

Indeed, the next agenda in the making of this potentially epic movie is the casting. As such, it won't be surprising to encounter a slew of rumors about who's going to be included in the upcoming film in the coming weeks. Will they bring in a mix of rookies and old names? Will they opt for an all-star cast? Or will they hire little known talents and one megastar for the gig?

Also, we won't be surprised if plot spoilers and leaks will be cropping up here and there in the months to follow. Will they bring in a new villain or stick to Doctor Eggman?

No release date has yet been given for the movie. For the meantime, keep checking for updates on the development of Sonic's adventure on the silver screen.
