Time magazine revealed its list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2014, among which are Latino celebrities in sports, politics and cinema.
Alfonso Cuarón, who recently won an Academy Award for Best Director for his film "Gravity", was acknowledged by Time as one of the most influential people in the world. A title he shares with footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, Pope Francis, Chile's President Michelle Bachelet, Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduro, and Uruguay's President José Mujica.
Pope Francis, born in Argentina and who has fought to reform the Catholic Church and cleanse it of sexual abuse scandals since he became Pope, was acknowledged by Time for his humility and inclusion discourse. On his part, Uruguayan Mujica is acknowledged for his former guerilla profile and his humble lifestyle, being placed in the "pioneers" category for his government's initiative to legalize marijuana.
President Nicolás Maduro is another politician on Time's list, placing him in the "leaders" category. Maduro has recently received strong criticism due to a wave of violence and repression being felt throughout Venezuela. Protesters, most of the students, took to the streets on Feb. 12 to demand a change in Maduro's policies, who assumed power in 2013 after the death of Hugo Chávez. The Venezuelan government has carried out acts of repression and militarized the streets of the country's main cities, with over 30 people dying during the protests.
Another Latino acknowledged by Time is footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, who received the title of "best athlete of the moment" from former footballer Pelé, in charge of writing the description of the Real Madrid forward in the magazine.
The list is topped by Beyoncé, who is also on the cover. Among the hundred most influential is also US President Barack Obama, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Janet Yellen, NBA player who recently came out of the closet Jason Collins, Robert Redford, Serena Williams, Lydia Ko and Richard Sherman.
