Although it was "Goonies" director Richard Donner who broke the news about the making of the hit movie's sequel, the idea of making a second installment of the 1985 flick was actually acclaimed filmmaker/producer Steven Spielberg's.

"Hopefully we're going to get this done, period. Spielberg came up with the idea of doing a sequel after 30 years. You don't do it without him, and he came up with another storyline and he's right on," Donner reportedly told TMZ.

"As we previously reported, Donner wants the original cast to return -- and now that he's got Spielberg behind him...we're guessing Josh Brolin might be willing to read the script," TMZ noted.

This should put Corey Feldman's speculations to rest.

However, the director is still not confident whether the original cast will return for the sequel. "God knows, it's up to them. If they have any sense they will, if they don't they won't," Donner was quoted by Cinemablend as saying.

The original cast involved Brolin, Feldman, Martha Plimpton, Sean Astin, Jeff Cohen, Ke Huy Quan, Kerri Green, and John Matuszak.

According to The Independent, Hollywood filmmaking icon Spielberg "co-wrote the script for the first movie, with the next set to take place 30 years later and feature Mikey, Brand and the rest of the characters' children."

The original movie focused on a group of young outsiders from the Goon Docks in Oregon. The gang later discover an ancient map and goes on a treasure hunt.

There has been no update yet on when the sequel will start shooting and no date has been set on its future release. Donner himself has not directed any film in the last 7 years, although he and his wife run a company that produces the "X-Men" films, according to The Guardian.
