The PS4 has gone ahead of the Xbox One in terms of hardware sales for the month of March, confirms the NPD Group.

Quoting Liam Callahan, a games industry analyst of the consumer market research group, CNet reports, "In March 2014, Sony's PS4 led hardware sales for the third month in a row." The PS4-maker recently announced that global cumulative sales for the current-gen game console has hit 7 million. Earlier in March, Sony claimed to have surpassed the 6 million mark in terms of global hardware sales.

On the other hand, Microsoft sold-in 311,000 units in the US alone for the month of March, the company said in a post. "The console had surpassed 5 million units sold-in -- meaning only sold to retailers, not purchased by consumers - worldwide," adds CNet.

Although the Xbox One seems to have lost it to the PS4 when it came to number of consoles sold, Microsoft maintains that the company accounts for the most number of games sold across all platforms.

"With Xbox One and Xbox 360 combined, the Xbox platform sold the most games across all console platforms with 4.1 million games sold. Xbox One sold 1.4 million games in March and Xbox 360 sold 2.7 million, totaling 49 percent of the total software market share (Xbox 360 and Xbox One combined)," Microsoft said.

The Xbox One title "Titanfall" was reportedly the top-selling game for the month of March, notes Joystiq. The outlet says that based on the March NPD report, the title is the second-highest selling game for Xbox One a mere month after its March 11 release.

The PS4 title "Infamous: Second Son" took the second spot on the list of the top-selling games for the month of March, followed by last-gen title "South Park: The Stick of Truth." The first-person shooter game, "Call of Duty: Ghosts" comes in 4th with another last-gen title, "Dark Souls II" closing the top 5, reports Joystiq.
