Pop singer Lorde literally met a "diamond in the flesh" as popularized by her song "Royal", when she met George Brett, Major League Baseball (MLB) hall of famer of the Kansas City Royals, according to MTV.com. MLB's official account posted a photo of Lorde and Brett on Twitter with the caption, "And now you're Royal. @lordemusic meets @Royals icon George Brett." on April 16, 2014.

Her song, which entered the top ten of the Billboard charts and subsequently made number one in 2013, was actually inspired by George Brett, a 13-time all-star MLB player whose career spanned 21 years with the Kansas City Royals. Lorde made the revelation to VH1.

She said in 2013, "I had this image from the National Geographic of this dude signing baseballs. He was a baseball player and his shirt said 'Royals'. And I was like 'I really love that word', because I'm a big word fetishist, I'll pick a word and I'll pin an idea to that. It was just that word and I was like 'This is really cool.'" according to a report by E! Online

The 17-year old New Zealander singer met the third baseman in Las Vegas at her concert on April 15, 2014. Her old image of the famous Royals player was of Brett signing autographs for fans outside a stadium. The Kansas City Royals usually wore a white jersey with the team name in big bold blue letters in front. Brett also wore a blue baseball cap with the jersey, with the white letters "KC" which stands for "Kansas City". Brett retired with 3,154 career hits, which is the most by a third baseman in MLB history.

In a report by The Washington Post, the two stars did not get to meet earlier due to conflicts in schedule. The hall of famer, however, tried to contact her by sending an autographed jersey. He wrote on it, "Lorde, you are Royal to me."
