Google Inc. executives said on Tuesday that the company is set to release a modular smartphone that anyone could configure with features they wish to put in. The Wall Street Journal said Project Ara would entail hardware modules, like a camera or a blood-sugar monitor, and software available on Google Play to be fitted in a metal endoskeleton designed for the smartphone and are held by magnets.

At the first developer conference for Project Ara, deputy director Kaigham Gabriel of Google's Advanced Technology and Projects Group said about the customizable smartphone, "The existing way of making smartphones is mature. But there are new ways of making phones. We want it to be like an app store. You may want a blood-sugar monitor and a cigarette lighter on your phone. Why should you not have that?"

1. Project Ara gets you your money's worth for buying a smartphone

Although the end goal of Google is to build a large ecosystem of hardware modules, one neat thing is that you get your money's worth by building the smartphone that you wish you have. Starting with a basic function-equipped phone at $50, you have control on how much you wish to spend on your phone. This means no phone contract charges for those who cannot afford a smartphone at an outright cost.

2. Project Ara allows you to express yourself via your smartphone

CNET said that as Project Ara is customizable, every feature you put into your phone is based on your own choice and need.

3. Project Ara exposes you to the future

The custom feature of Project Ara itself is a game-changer in the smartphone industry. Companies will now focus on creating miniature-sized modules with future-forward technology like 3D printing capabilities that you can incorporate to your mobile phone.

4. Project Ara is big on health

Google's Project Ara utilizes biometrics technology made available on eye tracking and heart-rate sensor modules that would make module recommendations for your smartphone on your behalf, should you get overwhelmed with customizing your phone. Moreover, the health modules are helpful standalone items to keep your vitals in check, WSJ said.

5. Project Ara is a collaborative effort

The possibilities that a smartphone could do for you are now endless, thanks to the collaborative project. The good thing about Google is that its approach to the project is consumer-based and is not afraid to share almost everything about the project, including the timeline.

Project Ara team leader Paul Eremenko expects that the smartphone project will be done on April 1st next year.
