The latest medical reports on writer Gabriel García Márquez indicate that he is stable and recovering at home after suffering serious pulmonary and urinary infections, which forced him to be hospitalized in Mexico City.

Through a press release, the wife of the 1982 Nobel Literature Prize, Mercedes Barcha, said that even if he is "fragile" and at risky due to possible complications, Márquez is home, monitored by specialist doctors.

"His condition is stable although he's fragile and there are risks of complications due to his age," reads the document published by Univisión.

The Colombian writer's wife and their sons, Rodrigo and Gonzalo, took the opportunity to thank everyone for the shows of support and love expressed towards the writer. "Thank you for the support from friends and the media," and asked the media to respect the family's privacy.

Despite many doctors avoiding publishing a detailed report on "el Gabo's" health, sources quoted by Mexican newspaper El Universal assure that Márquez received attention for complications in a case of lymphatic cancer he managed to overcome in 1999. The source said that the writer is receiving attention through palliative remedies only after checking out from the National Institute of Medical and Nutritional Sciences in Mexico City last April 8.

87-year-old García Márquez was taken in an ambulance to his home in a luxurious neighborhood in southern Mexico City, where hospital authorities said he would continue to recuperate.

"Mister Gabriel García Márquez checked out today at around 15:30 hours. His delicate state is in accordance to his age and will recuperate at home," said Jaqueline Pineda, spokesperson for the National Nutrition Institute, in a press release, reported Reuters.

García Márquez, who revolutionized Latin American literature by giving it a dimension of magical realism, joined the list of Latin American Nobel Literature Prize winners, along with Chileans Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda, and is considered one of the most famous, prolific and loved writers of Latin America, which he has managed to paint with an unique brush that fused the common with the magical.
