A 23-year-old woman has been in a state of coma since March 17, when she suffered a respiratory arrest during a routine visit to a Hawaii clinic she went to get her wisdom teeth taken out.

Kristen Tavares, a young mother of two, had undergone a procedure to extract the four wisdom teeth, when there were sudden complications that resulted in a respiratory arrest, which caused her brain to swell up.

Tavares, who gave birth to a boy three months ago and who has another 4 year old, was urgently transported from the dentist clinic in Hilo to Maui where she was interned in a hospital where she remains in a state of coma since last week, connected to a respirator, according to The Daily News.

According to the same source, the family of the young woman revealed that the dentist in charge of the procedure was Dr. John Stover, a known dentist and plastic surgeon who has various offices in Hilo.

Since 2010, four complaints for inappropriate professional conduct have been presented against Stover; however, in two of them, one from 2010 and another from 2012, investigators did not find sufficient evidence and were dismissed.

Two other complaints against the doctor were presented in 2012 and 2013. In both cases, the lawsuits are pending, and no further details have been revealed, according to The Daily News.

Chauncey Prudencio, Tavares' boyfriend, told local media that so far it is not known why the young woman suffered a respiratory arrest; however, it has been detailed that the young woman is not responding and is connected to a respirator, according to The Huffington Post.

So far, Hawaii authorities have not started an investigation, while Dr. Stover's office has not made an official statement either.
