Breakfast lovers celebrate!

In celebration of National Pancake Day, the IHOP served up free short stacks of their classic buttermilk pancakes on Tuesday until 10pm.

They have been doing the same thing every year since 2006, but how did IHOP's annual celebration begin?

LA Times reported that National Pancake day is traditionally celebrated on Fat Tuesday (also known as Shrove Tuesday in some countries), the day before the beginning of Lent season, and it has been around for centuries.

Why pancakes, though? Apparently, serving up the fluffy breakfast favorite is the perfect way to use up eggs, fats, and milk in the house before embarking on the 40 days of fasting from Ash Wednesday to Easter.

Of course, there are limitations to IHOP's Pancakes Day. According to NY Daily  participating IHOP restaurants will give only one dish per person. They are also celebrating the day for a cause: customers are encouraged to donate to the Children's Miracle Network Hospital or other designated local charities in return.

According to the IHOP website:

"The Children's Miracle Network Hospitals raises funds and awareness for 170 member hospitals that provide 32 million treatments each year to kids across the U.S. and Canada. Donations - including all those made on IHOP National Pancake Day - stay local to fund critical treatments and healthcare services, pediatric medical equipment and charitable care. Since 1983, Children's Miracle Network Hospitals has raised more than $5 billion, most of it $1 at a time through the charity's Miracle Balloon icon. Its fundraising partners and programs support the nonprofit's mission to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible."

According to the restaurant chain's website, they have raised around $13 million since they started the celebration back in 2006, and that they hope to raise another $3 million this year.

So wouldn't it be nice (and a good way to begin the Lent season) to give to a charitable cause while enjoying a free short stack?
