Clean shaves are a thing of the past as facial hair makes it back in style. With heartthrobs like George Clooney, Ryan Gosling, and Jake Gyllenhaal sporting some sort of facial shrubbery, stylish men in the U.S. are taking out their wallets for beard transplants that cost them around $7000 a pop, according to Yahoo!

In a report from DNA info, New York doctor Jeffrey Epstein said, "Whether you are talking about the Brooklyn hipster or the advertising executive, the look is definitely to have a bit of facial hair."

Another doctor, Yael Halaas, noted that he gets a lot of detail-oriented people and young professionals in their 20s and 30s who are seeking to have the procedures.

How does a beard transplant work? According to DNA info, hair for these transplants are typically taken from the head of the patient and planed through micro-incisions on bare patches of the face in a procedure that can take as long as eight hours under local anesthesia.

Doctors prefer head hair, but in case of balding patients, chest hair may also be used. Once transplanted, the beard gradually takes root, and even thought the hair falls out, the roots stay and begin to grow new hair within a few months, according to doctors. The new beard can then be shaved regularly and will grow back in, like real hair does.

Florida-based doctor, Glenn Charles, said that patients may bring in a picture of an actor or model that they wanted to look like, naming George Clooney and Ryan Gosling as regular facial hair role models. Other popular requests include Brad Pitt or Tom Selleck.

A beard-transplant patient described the change in his appearance as a gradual process. He said, "It wasn't like 'Wow. What happened to you?' like one day...you dyed your hair," Peter said. "Nobody really noticed. It is not a drastic change."

The patient also added, "Sometimes I am clean-shaven or it's more scruff and sometimes I let it grow out. At least I have choices, right?"

In a report by stuff.co.nz, it has been noted that 90% of the transplants tend to flourish, but it may take up to 10 months to see full results.
