After the long awaited immigration reform in the United States was suspended by the House of Representatives in 2013, a report published on Tuesday revealed that businessman George Soros increased the amount of donations to political groups who favor legislation in immigration matters in the United States.

According to a report by EFE, quoted by The Latin American Tribune Herald, the Jewish investor and philanthropist born in Hungary but now a nationalized American citizen, reported an increase in the amount of his donations during 2013, a year marked by social pressure and democrat attempts at approving an integral immigration reform that would open a way to the legalization of the status of over 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States.

Through his foundation, the Open Society Center, Soros donated $11 million dollars in 2013, an amount that triples the $3.25 million donated in 2012 to various political causes, reported The Washington Post.

According to the quoted newspaper, the Alliance for Citizenship, an organization that in 2013 organized a few dozen protests and gatherings in different states in support of the immigration reform, was the main receptor of donations from the Open Society Center.

Soros, an 83-year-old liberal has stood out in the past for his support to social causes and for maintaining a firm relationship with democrats in the United States.

In 2012, he supported President Barack Obama's reelection campaign, and last week it was revealed that the Soros foundations in Latin America and the Caribbean would provide funds for universities and non-governmental organizations in Uruguay.

The billionaire also owns Mexico's Torre Mayor, the tallest building in Latin America.

In 2011, Forbes magazine calculated that Soros' fortune is approximately $22 billion dollars, placing him as the seventh richest person in the world.
